Application of large format logo on historic brickwork for Lucas UK

Case Study: Large-Format Paint Stencils

Lucas UK Group

  • Client: Lucas UK Group
  • Sector: Construction / Fit-Out
  • Project: External mural-style lettering – Timber Square Development, London
  • Service: 500-micron laser-cut paint stencils

Overview

Lucas UK Group, a long-standing client and expert in high-spec fit-out and finishes, approached us to support a striking signage piece at the Timber Square development in Southwark, London. The brief was to supply durable stencils for spray-painting large lettering directly onto the brick façade of the site’s existing “Print” building.

Project Scope

The design involved bold lettering measuring 2.5 metres tall per character, forming a mural-style sign stretching 13 metres across the face of the building. Installed at approximately 20 metres high, the Lucas team worked from a MEWP to apply and spray each stencil section individually.

We supplied a set of 500-micron polyester stencils, chosen for their rigidity and strength—key for ensuring the stencil kept aligned during external application in a high-up, exposed setting.

How the Timber Square logo was applied at height

Challenges

  • Material Lead Time: The specific 500-micron material needed for this application came with a long lead time of 8–9 weeks, which required early coordination to meet the install deadline.
  • Application at Height: The team set each stencil by hand at height, using the MEWP to position letters and check spacing against the overall layout.
  • Specialist Coating: After masking, a custom ‘washed-out’ paint finish was applied—developed in collaboration with the client to create a worn, aged effect that complements the site’s historic brickwork.

Client Feedback

We went for the 500-micron as this was being installed externally circa 20m up the side of the ‘Print’ building. The final finish—with the washed-out effect—really delivered the rustic look we were after.

Result

The end result is a bold but sympathetic feature that reflects both the creative intent and industrial character of the development. The stencils played a key role in delivering a clean, consistent finish—without losing the hand-painted feel.
