Road cyclists passing over the 7 Stanes logo applied to the road using large stencils

Case Study: Custom Stencils for Tour of Britain

Tour of Britain

Client: Tour of Britain (Stage 3 in partnership with 7 stanes & Scottish Borders)
Sector: Event / Outdoor branding
Service: Extra-large polyester film stencils for road-marking and branding

Overview

For stage 3 of the Tour of Britain in the Scottish Borders, we were commissioned to design and deliver extra-large stencils to mark the course for 7 stanes and Scottish Borders branding. The stencils needed to be visible from above.

Project Scope

Location: Dumfries & Galloway, Scottish Borders.
Design: Large text and logo stencils—including the 7 stanes logo and course identification—intended to stretch across road surfaces and be clearly visible.
Material: Polyester film, 350 micron thickness (0.35 mm).
Dimensions & Application: Logos were up to 7 metres long so they could be seen from helicopters.
Application method: Temporary road-marking spray paints were used which wear away over time, and any residue is removed afterward by jet-wash. The 7 stanes logo paints were matched to Pantone colours.
Manufacturing detail: The extra-long text stencils were manufactured as one continuous roll to enable efficient application. Multi-colour logo stencils were cut in separate layers for each colour.

Challenges & Solutions

Material & Durability: The use of 350 micron polyester film offered the rigidity and strength needed for outdoor application, while being suitable for temporary road-marking paints.
Application Logistics: Applying stencils across roads at large scale required logistical coordination. The continuous roll design and multilayer stencils facilitated faster deployment on site.
Colour Matching & Brand Integrity: Ensuring the 7 stanes brand colours matched the exact Pantone references.
Removal & Temporary Nature: Because the painting was meant to be temporary, using road-mark-compatible spray paints that could be jet-washed later was a vital part of the plan.

Result

The final implementation delivered high-impact, visible brand and course markings for the Tour of Britain event stage. The stencils enabled a consistent, professional finish across large scale surfaces and ensured the branding and signage stood out clearly from above and on the ground. We’re thrilled to have supported such a high-profile event and to see our work in action.

“Getting the chance to see our stencils in use at the Tour of Britain was fab! On this occasion we worked closely with the guys at 7 Stanes on applying their logo stencils to the road to have maximum effect on the day and disappear over time”— Sarah Gleave, MD & “genius”, Laser Cutting Services Ltd.
