Custom Stencils for Heritage Restoration Work

Recreating intricate details while protecting original features

Restoration work often requires a very different approach from replacing something with new. Original features need to be preserved wherever possible, while damaged or faded areas must be repaired with care.

We were recently contacted by Bedford Victorian Restoration with an unusual and technically detailed project involving an original Victorian tiled floor.

Recreating the original tile pattern

The floor featured a repeating geometric design made up of small decorative tiles. Some areas of the pattern needed repainting, but the new detail had to closely follow the shape and character of the original tiles.

Using the existing design as a reference, we produced a custom self-adhesive stencil that could be temporarily positioned over an original tile. This allowed the restoration team to paint selected sections of the pattern accurately before removing the stencil.

The photographs show the stencil being carefully aligned with the surrounding tiles and the finished design blending back into the wider floor.

Why use an adhesive stencil for restoration work?

A self-adhesive stencil can be particularly useful when working with small, detailed patterns. It stays securely in position while paint is applied and helps reduce movement and paint creeping beneath the design.

Once the work is complete, the stencil can be carefully removed, making it a practical option for recreating decorative details without permanently covering the original surface.

Depending on the project, custom stencils can help with:

  • Victorian and encaustic-style floor tile patterns
  • Decorative wall and ceiling details
  • Period signs, lettering and house numbers
  • Furniture and architectural features
  • Repeating borders and geometric designs
  • Recreating damaged or missing decorative elements

A successful collaboration

Bedford Victorian Restoration specialises in sympathetic work on period properties, using traditional craftsmanship and repair methods suited to historic buildings. Their team carefully positioned and painted the design, creating a result that respected the appearance of the original floor.

Emma from Bedford Victorian Restoration left us a five-star review, explaining that the job required temporarily sticking a tile pattern over an original Victorian tile so that selected sections could be painted. She praised our quick response and helpful approach, adding that both the restoration team and their client were very happy with the finished result.

Do you need a custom stencil for restoration work?

Every restoration project is different. We can work from photographs, drawings, existing patterns or supplied vector artwork to create a stencil suited to the design and application.

If you need to recreate a decorative pattern, marking or architectural detail, send us an image and the approximate dimensions. Our team can advise on the most suitable stencil material and whether the design will need adapting before it is cut.
