How do I use my temporary body stencils with a sponge?

Body stencils are widely used in the fashion industry, film and theatre production by make artists and designers. They are a quick and easy method to apply intricate designs in multiple colours and easily removed after an event.

Body stencils are laser cut for high definition outlines. They are made in high quality polyester film both adhesive and non-adhesive backed. They are tough and durable and can be used many times.

- A skin test should always be done prior to application.
- Prepare area to be painted by washing with light soapy solution and wipe with isopropyl alcohol. Make sure you clean an area larger than the stencil itself.
- Protect any clothing before applying paint
- If using a non-adhesive backed stencil, use cosmetic body adhesive to secure stencil while applying body paint and make sure that the stencil is securely positioned.
- Use skin safe body airbrush paints and a small soft sponge to apply colours.
- Apply lighter shades first, using a separate sponge for each colour. Do not over apply as the paint may run under the stencils.
- Build up depth of colours to create desired finish.
- Remove stencil.
- Remove any excess paint with isopropyl.
- A setting powder can be applied to the tattoo. Remove excess with a soft brush.

- Self-adhesive body safe stencil: Remove backing sheet and position the stencil securely. Press down firmly. Flatter areas will give the best results.
- Airbrush the desired colours, beginning with the lighter shades.
- Remove the stencil and any overspray which may have crept beyond the outer edge of the stencil.
- Dust the tattoo with setting powder and remove excess with a soft brush.

How do I use my stencils with aerosols/spray paint?

- Make sure the area/item you are stencilling is clean and dry.
- Check positioning of entire design.
- Interior/ small items - lightly mark lines or dots to determine vertical/horizontal axis alignment/positioning of your entire design. You can use repositionable spray glue (Spray mount) if required on the reverse of the stencil. You can use duct tape to secure edges also if required. (Larger stencils – see ‘how do I use my large stencils?’).
- Keeping airbrush or can 3” – 4” from stencil, apply subsequent light coats building up to desired colour intensity.
- Check paint tin for instructions on paint thickness/ coverage and again apply in multiple light coats.
- Once dry and you have completed all your design layers, peel off the stencils.

How do I use my chalkboard stencil?

Using stencils as a method of advertising onto chalk boards is quick effective way of advertising a product, special offer or event. By using a stencil, the results will be consistent, which means you can allocate the job to anyone who can colour in! The method is quick and messages can be quickly renewed with an alternative design. They are often used in coffee houses, for menu boards and promotional events.

- Make sure your chalkboard surface is clean, dry and grease free.
- Position and secure your stencil with masking tape, making sure that it is level and central if required.
- Traditional chalks, chalk pens or spray chalks can be used through the stencil.
- Outline the shapes and then fill is as you go.
- If using several colours, always start with the lighter shades first. When all areas are complete, remove the stencil and blow away any excess dust.

How do I use my stencils with chalk spray?

Chalk stencils are a popular for a quick adverting campaign. On walls, streets, pavements. They are fast and effective and can be used with temporary chalk spray which is widely available. If the paint is applied lightly, the stencils will last a few days. If a heavy application is applied, they could last for several months. Alternatively, they can be removed immediately after the event with suitable oil or water based remover.

- Choose a suitable location.
- Clean area, brushing away large stones. The surface needs to be dry.
- Smaller stencils can be laid down and spray chalk paint applied.
- For best results, it is advisable to build up the paint gradually. Over application can lead to a smudged messy image.
- Larger stencils are better to be secured with duct tape to help avoid the stencil from moving or being blown away.
- If using more than one colour, always start by applying the lighter colours.
- If using the stencil multiple times, it may be necessary to clean away the paint on the stencil. Alternatively, if they are being applied in several locations, it could be worthwhile buying more than one copy.
- Surfaces vary: the smoother the better.

How do I use my cappuccino coffee stencils?

Cappuccino stencils are widely used throughout today’s ever growing café culture. Most logos can be simplified and adapted to be a quick, effective method of decoration to increase brand awareness and give an attractive finish to a frothy simple coffee.

- Prepare the coffee with a good proportion of milk. Full fat is the best for frothing, but semi skimmed and skimmed can be used.
- Try to achieve a smooth froth that covers the surface.
- Hold the stencil template over the top of the coffee, as close to the froth as possible.
- Lightly sprinkle with cocoa (over applying will result in too much dust and will not give a sharp result).
- Remove the stencil carefully.
- Top up the milk carefully if the froth has dropped.
- Serve with a generous slice of your favourite cake!

How do I use my stencils for bread/baking?

Artisan bread making is a growing art and many decorating techniques have been revived. Stencils can be used with flour, seeds and even a little cocoa. They are quick and effective and make any handmade bread even more delicious to admire as well as eat!!

- Prepare the dough either one large loaf or individual rolls.
- Generously dust the dough with flour as it is shaped ready to apply stencils.
- Lay stencil on the surface.
- Dust a generous amount of cocoa over the stencil (try poppy/sesame seeds as an alternative).
- Remove stencil.
- Cut into the edge of the loaf to allow the dough to continue to rise without distorting the design.
- Bake. Leave to cool and enjoy!!.

How do I use my clean graffiti stencils?

- For the best results use a low pressure on your power wash machine and applying more than once to achieve your desired effect.
- Fix the stencil securely using duct tape, or have an extra person to hold the section down, around the perimeter of the stencil making sure that fragile sections do not lift during application.

How do I use my large stencils?

- Stencils are cut from polyester sheets which have a maximum dimension. We can, however, ease application of extra large stencils by either providing sheets which can be flush fitted (butted up) or by providing registration marks.(dots in the corner of the stencils).
- Mark out the area where stencil is being applied, checking vertical/horizontal positioning. It is easier to work with one sheet at a time. Secure if necessary, with duct tape or low tack masking tape.
- If applying to a smoother emulsion surface, you can apply repositioning glue by lightly spraying the reverse of stencil.

How do I clean my stencils?

- You can get multiple uses before cleaning however, you can prolong by not letting paint dry on your stencil overnight.
- Stencil can be cleaned using the appropriate solvent for your paint (check the tin!) or water.

Troubleshooting

- Paint bleed: almost always caused by over spraying.
- Graffiti or any outdoor stencils, where weather is an issue: We would advise applying on dry windless day (if no option – stick it down securely).
