File Format Advice

Sending us Attachments? — we'll show you how Our guideline information and recommendations for creating files

Custom stencil file format type laser cutting

Can LASERCUTIT laser cut a stencil from my design?
Yes, if you have your own design/visual we can convert it into a stencil. If you would like us to design your artwork/stencil from a visual we have a professional team that will create a stencil design to suit.

Which type of file can I send?
Whichever is best for you!
We prefer to work from the following vector formats: AI, DXF, DWG, EPS, SVG. However, if you’re not sure what type of file you have, send it to us anyway and we can advise.

Can I send a sketch or image file?
We can accept visuals, in the first instance in JPEG, PDF, TIFF, PSD or simply black and white artwork.

Can you give me a quote from my visual?
If you are happy to get a ‘ballpark’ estimate we can work from a visual where you attach/refer to similar work from our site, the internet, or sketch.

If you or your clients require a ‘firmed up’ quote we will need, or will have to create, a vector file to allow us to calculate.

Custom stencil file type format bitmap vector

Essentially there are two categories of file formats: Vector and Bitmap. Our preferred file format for artwork you send us is Vector…

What is a Vector?
Vector files use X and Y coordinates to plot each point on a line or curve. This allows vector files to be infinitely scalable and can be enlarged to any size. A simple way to tell if your file is a vector is to zoom in as much as possible: if the image stays smooth, then it’s probably a vector.
We can take vector files in formats AI, DXF, DWG, EPS, SVG. These are most commonly used in programs such as Illustrator or AutoCAD.

What is a Bitmap?
Bitmap files are images made up of thousands of pixels (tiny squares of colour). These most commonly come in formats JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP. When scaled these files will start to look blocky or ‘pixelated’.

Can you give me a quote from my bitmap?
If you are happy to get a ‘ballpark’ estimate we can work from a bitmap or where you attach/refer to similar work from our site, the internet, or sketch.
If you or your clients require a ‘firmed up’ quote we will need, or will have to create, a vector file to allow us to calculate.

Is PDF a Vector file?
Basically a PDF can be a vector or a bitmap. Or it can be a mix of both. A simple way to tell if your file is a vector is to zoom in as much as possible: if the image stays smooth, then it’s probably a vector.

Custom stencil artwork proof file

Can I see what my stencil or laser cutting will look like?
Yes, in the first instance (and if time constraints allow) we can send examples of the various thicknesses and types of stencil material, be it Polyester film or Paint Mask. Or for Laser Cutting we provide a testing service if your fabric is unusual.
When you order, we always send a proof for your approval, prior to laser cutting your stencil or project. With this proof you will see exactly what we’ll be cutting, including relevant dimensions and bridges/breaks (the small bars of material that hold any floating ‘islands’ in place – see image).

Can I make changes?
Yes, that is what the proofing system is for – to ensure your artwork will produce a successful stencil.

What if my design is technically challenging?
If you are happy to get a ‘ballpark’ estimate we can work from a bitmap or where you attach/refer to similar work from our site, the internet, or sketch.
e.g.: Your text may be too small to successfully stencil, but we make recommendations at proof stage regards the best interpretation of your design to get it to work.

How quickly can I get my stencil?
From order, through proof approval to despatch: We have one of the quickest turnaround times of any UK laser cutting company. We offer next day or at most a couple of days, for most relatively straightforward stencil projects.

What will my stencil look like?
Your stencil will be sent flat-packed, unless you specially request it be rolled (thicker qualities will retain a memory so it is not as advisable).
You can clearly see the areas to be stencilled in this image of the finished laser cut Polyester film stencil.

How do I apply my stencil?
We send application instructions with each order or check out our step by step advice and videos here.

How long will my stencil last?
This is entirely dependent on how you take care of your stencil: Do not let paint or chalk spray dry on it overnight, store in clean dry conditions and keep flat if possible.

Can I get a repeat order?
Yes, we will keep your file and can quote as a repeat order at a unit price. If you require the same artwork but in a different size we will re-quote if there is a considerable difference in the dimensions.
