Dear Sarah
Although the Bluefin Tuna has quite small scales for such a large fish,
I definitely wanted to achieve the appearance of the scales which the
visitor would see when looking closely at the model. Hand painting this
would be almost impossible as there are thousands of these and they
are so mathematical in placement and appearance. It would have taken
weeks by hand.
From a small vector file I gave Laser Cutting Services we experimented
with different size scales in both plastic and paper materials. They
were very helpful providing these samples for me to experiment with
and understood the challenges of the job. A plastic substrate was finally
chosen, which I applied with spray adhesive and airbrushed through.
I then carefully removed this mask leaving the effect of fine scales
showing. They were then able to multiply this by tiling a small section
together to provide me with a large roll of laser cut stencil.
Thanks again for all your help and rising to a difficult challenge.
